A Red inked Maltese Cross obliterator was used for the first issues, superseded with black ink in February 1841, was in predominant use of the black ink was in use now.
Back stamped 5th April 1841
Plate 8
First used on the 31st July 1840,
Destroyed September 8th 1841

Reds printed from black Plates were ONLY from
Plates 1b.2,5,8,9,10,11.
Plate 8. The "O" Flaw occurs nearly in all of the Stamps of Plate 8. AA to OJ shows state 2. Many ot the units were repaired and are classed as State 2. As in other die 1 Plates the repair was by re-entry, because of the nature of the re-entry process the "O" flaws were obliterated. Experimental paper was first used an a few printings of plate 7 the rest of the paper being used on plates1b, 8, 9, and 10.

GIVEN THAT THIS ITEM IS BEING PLATED FROM A SCAN THE FOLLOWING OBSERVATIONS ARE MADE:-

The stamp displays a very definite "O" flaw so it can only be plate 7(black only), 8,9,10.
Given that the Date of back stamp is AP 25 1841, from the records this indicates that it can be any of the above plates.
Position of the check letter E discounts plate 9, 10. But allows 8.
Position of the check letter K discounts plate 9, 10. But allows 8.
Both plates 8 and 9 should show a "vertical Guide line" 8 in the top right hand corner Star box VERY CLOSE TO THE FRAME?--- plate 9 close to the upper box in the OUTSIDE margin ---With plate 10 a small mark or dot would appear in the K square slightly right top of this letter.

This leaves us with Plate 8 First State, the bottom of the base line should extend very slightly to the right?

WITHOUT HAVING the stamp I am unable judge this or to see the guide line in the north east square.

The date stamp of 25th April 1841 would be in the time line for - - - -
A late repair 1841 {second State} (Affecting only the printings in Red) was made to several stamps including the one check letters EK. The left hand frame line being weak
HOWEVER
as the "O" flaw still shows (re-entry correctred this white flaw)
it has to be
Plate 8 First state as originally Confirmed.

As to valuation It has a very fine but heavy MX cancellation, appears to have 4 superb Margins.
Current CV is £70.00 off cover (Major Retailers sell for £25.00); a premium should be expected for a fine example on cover say 2.5 times?
